All early-childhood practitioners in some 3,600 government-run or -supported institutions will receive a 15 per cent increase in monthly salary effective April 1, 2019.

The Ministry of Education says some $550 million has been allocated to support the new Brain Builders programme.

It says that this is in keeping with the ministry's mandate of providing support for early stimulation, as well as supporting the direction of the Early Childhood Commission.

In addition, the ministry says it has allocated $42 million in the 2019-2020 Budget to cover the cost of 12,000 early-childhood teachers and practitioners in public educational institutions obtaining food handlers' permits and annual police records.

Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid noted that the directive is in keeping with the Government's thrust to improve the sector.
