PNP and JLP supporters flock the streets of Port Antonio during Nomination Day on March 15.

The People's National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) have called off their planned mass meetings for this Tuesday.

The announcement made a short while ago in a joint statement signed by Julian Robinson, the general secretary of the PNP, JLP general secretary Dr Horace Chang as well as PNP campaign director Maxine Henry Wilson and JLP deputy leader Desmond McKenzie.

The development follows the controversy over whether the police had approved the request by the PNP for its meeting.

In the joint statement, both parties agreed that consistent with electoral laws, there will be no campaigning Wednesday.

However, they say their agreements do not prevent local or other normal campaign activities.

They have also committed to continuing to urge political supporters and Portland Eastern residents to avoid confrontation.
