#EastPortlandBattle | JLP supporters celebrate 'East Portland Christmas Day'
A Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporter has declared today "East Portland Christmas Day."
"Because East Portland needed a change and we see where we are going to get a change," said the man who only identified himself as 'Dukey'.
The taxi operator was among a handful of JLP supporters in the community of Prospect still revelling in their party's historic victory in yesterday's by-election.
The JLP’s Ann- Marie Vaz defeated the People's National Party’s (PNP) Damion Crawford, ending the partying 30 year control of the constituency.
Several metres away, a small group of PNP supporters was still in shock.
For some, it was the first time they are experiencing an electoral defeat for their party.
Sherece Rhooms, a die-hard PNP supporter, was hoarse from campaigning for the party's candidate.
"This shock me. Me a work [for the PNP] from before me have my vote. Me a 51 [years old], a go 52 and me never see Labourite win yah so," Rhooms told The Gleaner.
Rhooms blamed the defeat on alleged vote-buying.
"A dat bother me cause a thief dem thief the election," she charged.
But, the JLP supporters said the PNP lost because of their arrogance and the lack of infrastructure development in the constituency.
"You see because dem say yah so a stronghold and dead PNP seat dem no care 'bout we," said one woman.
