NERHA disputes suggestion mentally ill woman got pregnant at St Ann's Bay Hospital
The North East Regional Health Authority (NERHA) is disputing suggestions that a mentally ill woman became pregnant while she was a patient at the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital, in St Ann.
The mother of the 27-year-old woman has indicated that she is uncertain where her daughter became pregnant.
However, she has asserted publicly that her daughter was a patient at the hospital around the time she became pregnant.
NERHA, in a statement yesterday, acknowledged that the mentally ill woman was admitted to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital on May 26, 2018 and discharged “to her home” on July 8, 2018.
However, NERHA says ultrasound readings suggest that the woman’s expected date of delivery would be April 2, 2019 with a variance of plus or minus two weeks.
“Consultation with our senior Obstetrician/Gynaecologist revealed that based on the foregoing, the calculated date of conception would be during the week of July 21, 2018, approximately two weeks after the patient’s discharge from the hospital,” NERHA said.
The agency says it has extended an invitation to the woman’s mother to hold talks with the management of the hospital, but she has been unable to make the appointment that was set.
NERHA says it will continue to try and meet with the family.
The St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital says the security of all patients, especially the most vulnerable, is of utmost importance and taken very seriously.
