My fellow Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica,

As we celebrate the 63rd anniversary of our nation’s Independence, let us embrace this year’s theme: “Be Proud, Be Bold in the Black Green and Gold.” It is both a tribute to our past and a call to action for our future.

We are proud of our enduring spirit that has been shaped by courage, brilliance and unity. Our journey, marked by challenges and triumphs, continues to inspire. Jamaica is now not just a global cultural and sporting superpower, culturally vibrant and influential in cuisine, music and fashion; but also achieving economic resilience.

Jamaica now enjoys the lowest ever debt to GDP ratio of 67.0 per cent having been over 140 per cent in 2013. We now have the highest ever investment rating by Standard & Poors, and Moodys; a stable exchange rate for years and lower interest rates and a booming real estate market. We are now enjoying the lowest level of unemployment ever at a mere four per cent. Also, Jamaica provides a special economic zone, a junior stock exchange and an over-performing main stock exchange. The country has been removed from the grey FATF list and is now seeing the benefits of a regulatory environment to encourage offshore investments.

Growth indicators reflect our progress, and there is renewed confidence in our capacity to transform opportunities into prosperity.

Jamaica is experiencing a sustained reduction in homicide and major crimes which are now down by about 36 per cent from 50 per 100,000 to 30 per 100,000. This has been largely due to a significant increase in funding to the Ministry of National Security. The Criminal Justice (Suppression of Crime) Act has led to the successful prosecution of all major gangs, leaving the police to now deal with splinter groups.

The overall reduction in crime in general across Jamaica is the result of bold reforms, community partnerships, and a renewed commitment to safety and justice.

Every gain made brings us closer to the Jamaica we envision, a nation where every citizen can thrive in peace and dignity.

To be bold is to dream beyond limitations. Whether it be advancing technological innovation, deepening diaspora connections, or standing tall on matters of equity and reparative justice, Jamaicans are charting new paths with tenacity and hope. We, at the High Commission, therefore encourage you to download apps for ConnectMeJa, the diaspora registration portal: https://connectmeja.com/, and the Jamaica Diaspora Engagement Model (Jam-Dem) https://jadiasporaengage.mfaft.gov.jm/ to stay informed about the opportunities for you in Jamaica.

Let us mark this Independence Day with a rededication to progress and unity. In every parish and diaspora community, may we carry forward the legacy of those who came before us, and nurture a future shaped by pride, boldness, and unwavering purpose.

Happy Independence, and may we continue to be proud, be bold, and steadfast in building Jamaica, land we love.

ALEXANDER WILLIAMS
