The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) and the Ministry of Finance are to meet on Friday to continue wage talks.

President-elect Mark Malabver says the organisation is expecting a substantially better offer.

“We have been pressing the Ministry of Finance for some time now to get a meeting to continue negotiations on behalf of the teachers. We are expecting that the Ministry of Finance will put a better offer on the table. That’s essentially where we are,” Malabver said.

The meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

The JTA had rejected the government’s latest wage offer of seven per cent.

Malabver had called the offer disrespectful.

“There are obviously challenges as it is already. The reality is that the government has placed an offer on the table. We have outrightly rejected that offer. We consider that offer a gross disrespect to our teachers…”

“Put it this way, it is over four years they are offering 7% - 0% in year one, which is tantamount to a wage freeze, and 2.5% over the next three years. It is the same proposal offer that they have given to other public sector workers," he outlined previously.
