Majority of Jamaicans are going into Tuesday night without electricity amid widespread flooding, downed utility poles, and blocked roads caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says up to 4:00 p.m., more than 530,000 Jamaica Public Service customers were without power.

This represented about 77 per cent of JPS’ customer base.

McKenzie told a news conference on Tuesday afternoon that restoration work is under way, with priority being given to hospitals and water pumping stations to maintain critical services.
