The historic Thomas Manning Building at The Manning’s School, a designated national monument in Westmoreland, has suffered extensive damage as Hurricane Melissa tore through western Jamaica this week.

The structure, believed to be the oldest surviving part of the institution, was built in the early 20th century and has long stood as a proud symbol of the school’s heritage.

In recent years, efforts were under way to restore the ageing building, which had deteriorated over time and become unsafe for use.

However, the devastation from the hurricane has dealt a major setback.

The school, which was struggling to source the rare and costly materials needed for the restoration, will now have to start rebuilding from scratch.

Meanwhile, other sections of the school compound also sustained damage.

Parts of the walkway have been left uneven, and the auditorium’s zinc roof was ripped away by the powerful winds.
