The S Hotel in Montego Bay has converted its entertainment lounge into a media base to assist journalists in western Jamaica struggling with communication and connectivity issues following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

The initiative aims to provide a stable workspace for reporters contending with unreliable phone service and limited email access as they cover recovery efforts across the hard hit western region.

Large parts of western parishes remain without electricity and internet access.

Hotel owner Christopher Issa said the move was “the least we could do,” noting that the media’s role in disseminating accurate, timely information is vital to national recovery.

“We are very happy to be able to do this, especially now when there are real challenges for journalists trying to get their work done,” Issa said. “Having a base where they can access emails and make phone calls is very important, and we are happy to facilitate that.”

Janet Silvera, president of the Western Jamaica Media Association, welcomed the move, describing it as a “meaningful intervention” that allows journalists to focus on delivering timely, accurate stories. Silver, who also write for The Gleaner, recalled reporters pulling over on highways and camping at police stations to access the internet.

The hotel will grant accredited journalists access to the S Club during designated hours. Silvera said the partnership not only addresses immediate needs but also creates a sustainable model for future emergencies.
