Sports Briefs: T&T's Bulletproof for Barbados Derby
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):
The 2015 Massy United Insurance Barbados Derby will have a Trinidadian presence when the big race comes off on July 25 at the Garrison Savannah here.
Bulletproof, a three-year-old colt, has been entered to contest the 76th running of the Barbados Derby, and horse-racing pundits are anticipating an exciting clash between the island's top creoles and the Trinidadian entrant.
The Barbados Turf Club said the bay colt, owned by Shivam Maharaj, is expected in Barbados on July 21, and should be at gallops in the days leading up to the Derby.
Chow wins Harry Jeffrey feature
WINNIPEG, Canada (CMC):
Jamaican jockey Chavion Chow won the feature CAN$25,000 Harry Jeffrey Stakes with 4-1 chance Witt Six as he reeled off a triple to dominate Saturday's eight-race card at Assiniboia Downs.
The 28-year-old, the championship leader at the Winnipeg oval, produced a stalking ride aboard the three-year-old brown gelding to beat the three-year-old non-winners - other than for their maiden - by half-length going a mile.
Chow broke Witt Six sharply to duel with Sly Gold through the first quarter-mile run in 23.60, before dropping off and allowing his rival to assume a near-two-length lead at the half.
However, Chow roused the gelding nearing the final turn, and he opened up to lead by two lengths at the top of the stretch.
Quiet Ry and Spider's Alibi came to challenge mid-stretch, and Chow was forced to pull everything from Witt Six before getting to the wire in a time of one minute, 39.80 seconds.
