Heavyweight Calabar sprinter, Michael Stephens, who comfortably progressed to Friday's Class One boys 100m final,  warned that his rival and last year's bronze medal winner, Jhevaughn Matherson (Kingston College) should fear him heading into the big clash.

Stephens and Matherson came face-to-face in the semi-finals on Friday afternoon, with the Calabar man tauntingly running beside Matherson, who seemed to have hurt himself in winning in 10.72 seconds. Stephens, who spent most of the race looking around him and at Matherson while appearing to exert minimal effort, crossed the line in 10.73. 

Matherson, to the dismay of the KC crowd, held on to his leg, and went down following the race before eventually walking off the track.

Stephens, who last year won gold in the Class Two 100m had some advice for Matherson. 

"I have no fear of (Jhevaughn) Matherson; Matherson should fear me,” Stephens told The Gleaner. “I am confident Calabar will defend our title.”

“I am not where I am supposed to be, as I had not trained from December to February, so fitness is not where it should be, but knowing me I am up for any challenge."

The Boys Class One final has been a much-talked about affair leading up to the championships. The field will also include outstanding sprinters like Chislon Gordon of Jamaica College who won semi-final three in 10.98 ahead of Calabar’s Tyreke Wilson (11.08) and Dominique Gray of Wolmer’s Boys (11.14) seconds.

In heat one, Odane Mcpherson of Greater Portmore (10.94), won ahead of St Catherine’s Asanie Smith (10.96) and Malique Scott of Excelsior (10.98).
 

The boys Class One 100m final takes place on Friday at 8:35 p.m.
