JAAA plans to resume weekend youth camps
Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association president, Dr Warren Blake, said that the body is in the process of resuming weekend training camps for youth athletes as they prepare for the IAAF World Under-18 Championships and the Commonwealth Youth Games in July.
Blake, in his bid for re-election to the role of president last year, centred his campaign manifesto on a return to regular training camps for youth athletes as he was concerned about Jamaica's performance at the World Youth Championships in 2015, where the country only earned one medal. However, there were no camps held in 2016. Back then, Blake had told The Gleaner that what he described as the "unavailability" of the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport had prevented any training in 2015.
Blake went on to say that there would definitely be camps in 2016.
"We will really have no excuse not to have a camp at G.C. Foster this year," he said in January last year.
However, with the passing of that year, there were still no camps held.
Blake gave a similar reason on Wednesday for the inactivity over 2016.
"It was about getting the people together, and getting somewhere suitable, because for quite a while in the past, we had used G.C. Foster," he said. "For some time, G.C. Foster's track wasn't functional, but now that the track is back up and running and the place has been fixed up a bit, we are going to be looking at having our camps.
"We want to start it as soon as possible, but right now, some of the kids are tied up in exams. So we'd have to see who we want to invite to the camps, how their exam schedules are - because they must be allowed the time to do their exams and get some studying done, but at the same time, we want them to keep active so that we can get an improved performance at these games."
The Gleaner reached out to officials at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport to see if talks between both parties did occur. They confirmed this, saying that they did speak with Blake and there were plans proposed for this month and next, but exams are taking place at the moment, so it would not be wise. They said that a date will, however, be confirmed in the near future.
