Jamalco on the hunt in SVL County Championships
Jamalco are aiming to win again when they face off against Rivoli in the Supreme Ventures Middlesex Major League County Championship netball match at Mineral Heights, Clarendon, this afternoon, beginning at 5 p.m.
The Clarendon team opened with a 56-36 victory over Manchester's Titans last weekend and the team's manager, Wayne Shaw, says they are looking to continue their winning ways when they meet their familiar St Catherine rivals later.
"We've played Rivoli so we know something about them," Shaw offered. "They haven't defeated us in the three times that we've met, so I expect that we'll get the better of them tomorrow.
"Our aim is to top the zone and when we reach the quarter-finals we take it from there," added Shaw.
Former national captain and shooter, Elaine Davis, will lead Jamalco's charge, along with defenders Althea Byfield and Kerry-Ann Brown, plus centre Samantha Mundle.
The match is one of several County Championship league encounters - with matches being played simultaneously - and falls under a new format being utilised by Netball Jamaica, the sport's local governing body, in its effort to foster general improvements with high level netball spread on a national basis.
There will be seven other Middlesex County matches at Mineral Heights. At 2 p.m., Supreme Ventures Minor League teams Hayes All Stars 'B' and Ken's Wild Flower, plus Surrey Sunshine Cereals Intermediate League teams Tryall Heights and Jetters, will open the show.
At 3 p.m., Dragons and MD Strikers will play in the Middlesex Supreme Ventures Minor League, while Surrey Sunshine Cereals Intermediate League contestants Ocho Rios Diamonds and Warriors will play.
Two Sunshine Cereals Intermediate League matches will be at 4 p.m. Middlesex's Hayes' All Stars 'A' and Friendship will face-off, while Surrey's Excelsior Eagles and Flames of Titchfield High, Portland, will contest the other.
Surrey's Jetsetters and St. Thomas' Morant Bay Uprising will contest another Surrey Sunshine Cereals Intermediate League match, beginning at 5 p.m.
Action will also take place in western Jamaica, with a Cornwall Sunshine Cereals Intermediate League triple-header at Montego Bay Boys' and Girl's Club in St James. Savannah of St Elizabeth and Trelawny's Falmouth United will play at 3 p.m., followed by Deeside vs Sting Rays at 4 p.m. St. Elizabeth's Barbary Hall will face hosts MoBay Boys' Club in the feature at 5 p.m.
