Rain forces cancellation of Basic School Champs

Heavy rains forced the cancellation of yesterday's third and final day of the seventh staging of the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) National Basic Schools Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

The cancellation meant that defending champions Torrington Early Childhood Development Centre retained their title. The coaches and principals were called to a meeting at 2 p.m. by meet director Anthony Gibbs and after deliberations lasting approximately one hour, they all agreed that on the advice of the doctors it was not safe for the championships to continue.

"The championships had to come a premature end because of the weather," said Gibbs.

"We started with rain and we had rain on the second day and this time it was worse than the two days before. It did not appear as if it was going to stop and so we had to make a decision to cancel it," he said.

"The medical persons came after we had made the decision to cancel the meet and they supported the move to call it off," Gibbs said.

Meanwhile, Spanish Town Infant were leading the championships with 46 points after 25 events. They were followed by Laura Basic (30), Gemglows Kindergarten and Citizens Advice Bureau/RJR (29 each) and St Francis Primary and Infant and Silverstone on 22 each.
