FORT ERIE, Canada (CMC):

Veteran Barbadian rider Chris Griffith continued to excel at Fort Erie racetrack here, riding a double on Sunday's seven-race card to keep pace with the younger members of the colony.

The 48-year-old was outstanding in piloting 2-1 choice Dylan to victory in race one over a mile before returning to take race six with 3-1 chance Malbec in a 5-1/2 furlong sprint.

A former Fort Erie champion, Griffith leads the standings with 12 wins, two clear of Helen Marie Vanek with Melanie Pinto back in third on seven wins.

Griffith raised the curtain on the day when he steered three-year-old bay gelding Dylan to a 4-3/4 length win over the three-year-old and upwards.

Smooth Passage led early on with Moosetoupsjaabar chasing and Griffith keeping Dylan in range. The pair were in contention on the far turn and then got the better of the stretch run to take the wire comfortably.

Stalking ride

Griffith produced another stalking ride to guide seven-year-old chestnut gelding Malbeck to a three-quarter length win over the three-year-old and upwards.

Malbec chased from third as hot favourite Flashy Margaritta cruised to the half in 45.86 seconds to lead by two lengths but Griffith rallied the gelding in the stretch and he responded to wear down the leaders and barely get up in time.

The Fort Erie season runs from May 30 to October 17.
