Davis gets third in U-18 100m

There was a major upset on yesterday's second day of competition at the IAAF World Under-18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

Jamaica's Kevona Davis, the overwhelming favourite in the girls' 100 metres, was surprised in the final of the event by Turkey's Mizgin Ay. Ay won gold in 11.62 seconds from Magdalena Stefanowicz of Poland. In a very close finish, both first and second were awarded the same time. Davis clocked 11.67 for third.

There were major concerns for the Jamaica camp as Davis was taken off the track on a stretcher, indicating that she had suffered an injury.

DeJour Russell was in fantastic form earlier in the day when he made his debut in the Under-18 110m hurdles. Competing in the first heat, the Calabar High athlete, despite easing up towards the end of his race, smashed the championships record of 13.13 set by his countryman; Jaheel Hyde, four years ago in Donetsk, Ukraine. Russell clocked an impressive personal best of 13.08.

Russell's teammate, Brighton Senior, was fourth in heat two in 13.83. He also advanced to the semi-finals.

Earlier, Sanique Walker, who, like Russell, went to the Championships as a World leader in her event, advanced to the girls' 400m hurdles final as the fastest qualifier after winning her heat in 58.74 seconds.

Cemore Donald did not complete her heat and failed to advance in the 800 metres.
