Becca’s funeral today at St Matthew’s Church

The funeral for Tony Becca, a former sports editor at The Gleaner Company (Media) Limited, will be held at St Matthew’s Church in Allman Town today ,starting at 10:30 a.m. Becca, 78, died on February 28 at the Andrews Memorial Hospital in St Andrew. Born November 10, 1940, Becca was Jamaica’s best known cricket writer. He covered more than 150 Test matches all over the world.Following his death Cricket West Indies president, Dave Cameron said: “West Indies cricket has lost a champion who spent his distinguished career chronicling the ups and downs of the sport he loved so much.” The former president of Melbourne Cricket Club was also well respected regionally and cricket commentators Andrew Mason of Barbados and Guyana-born Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira both said Caribbean journalism has suffered a great loss.

With hundreds expected to attend the funeral, Becca’s family has indicated that additional parking will be available at National Heroes Park. Interment will be at the St Andrew Parish Church cemetery in Half Way Tree and repast at Melbourne Cricket Club.
