When Akeem Bloomfield stormed to 19.81 seconds at the London Anniversary Games last year, he placed himself among a small group of athletes, who have both gone under 44 seconds in the 400m and dip under 20 seconds in the 200m.

But the achievement also posed a question for the former Kingston College standout, as he faces the dilemma of deciding which one of these events he will contest at the National Senior Championships in June.

Bloomfield, who predominately runs the 400m, became the second fastest Jamaican in that event when he posted 43.94 for second at the NCAA Division I outdoor championships two months before his spectacular 200m performance.

“I will be running one event at Trials (National Senior Championships) but I am not sure which one yet,” Bloomfield told The Gleaner.

Though the 21-year-old isn’t sure which race he will be seeking qualification in to compete at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha later this year, he is sure he wants to stand on the podium.

“My objective is to get a personal best in the 200m and 400m and, hopefully, I make the final at the World Championships and try to get a medal,” Bloomfield said.

His quest for winning his first senior medal for Jamaica has not gone down without challenges thus far, as he was forced to withdraw from a 200m at the Grenada Invitational earlier this season as well as the 400m at the Shanghai Diamond League last week.

“I am nowhere near peak fitness yet but I believe I have time to get there,” he said.

Bloomfield also has high hopes for the Jamaica’s men’s 4x400m team, which finished second at the recently concluded IAAF World Relays.

“I think we have a great group and hopefully this (finishing second) is the beginning of great things to come,” he said.

Bloomfield along with National record holder Rusheen McDonald, Demish Gaye and Nathon Allen registered 3:01.57 to finish behind Trinidad and Tobago, which posted 3:00.81.
