Jamaica had their first defeat of the Central American and Caribbean (CENTRO) Championships, losing 92-54 to Nicaragua on Saturday.

The tournament, being played in El Salvador, serves as a qualifier for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Head coach Rick Turner is confident that the team can put the defeat behind them and secure qualification to the second phase with victory over the hosts, this evening at 8 p.m.

Jamaica and Costa Rica share the lead at the top of the table with five points, followed by Nicaragua and Guyana, who have completed their fixtures, on four each, and El Salvador on three.

Turner is eyeing nothing but a victory against the home team.

Although the defeat against Nicaragua was ugly, Turner hopes the day’s rest will be of benefit after three consecutive matches.

“We will be playing an El Salvador team that is very good, and they are going to give us every bit of a test,” he said.

“They will also be in front of their home fans, and it is going to be quite a challenge, but hopefully, we can get the result we need to qualify.

“I am confident that if we play together and play the right way, that we can certainly have a good result.

“We had a really good practice today (Sunday), and I certainly am expecting the best. We will have a plan for them, and we’ll put our best foot forward.

“It is our final game, and we have to rise to the challenge.”
