After more than a year of inactivity, the national senior women’s team marked their return to competitive action with a 1-0 win over Nigeria at the BBVA Stadium in Houston, Texas, yesterday.

Deneisha Blackwood scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute as the Reggae Girlz held on for their first win of 2021 and first since defeating St Kitts and Nevis 7-0 on February 4, 2020, in the Concacaf Olympic Qualifying tournament. The COVID-19 pandemic prevented the team from participating in any football activities since March 2020.

Head coach Hubert Busby Jr gave three England-based players – goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer, forward Shania Hayles, and defender Vyan Sampson – their international debuts in a starting 11 that consisted of a number of players that featured in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.

The Reggae Girlz’s next assignment will be world champions the United States at the same venue on Sunday.
