JAAA decides against fans for National Trials
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) says no spectators will be allowed at the National Stadium for its National Senior and Junior Athletics Championships (Trials), which start on Thursday and runs until Sunday.
The decision was made hours after the JAAA was granted approval for a return of spectators by the Government on Wednesday afternoon. The Government granted the JAAA the permission to allow 5,000 fans in the venue but the body decided against it, citing logistical issues.
"After further review and consultation with Government and non-Government stakeholders, it was decided that all arrangements could not be implemented in time, hence spectators will not be accommodated," the JAAA said in a press release on Wednesday evening.
Had the JAAA not decided against such a move, Trials would have marked the first major local sporting event with spectators since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
