EDMONTON, Alberta (CMC):

IN-FORM JAMAICAN jockey Dane Nelson captured one of three added-money races on Friday’s eight-race card at Century Mile, as he came away with a brace to sustain his title challenge this season.

Riding in the CAN$50,000 Count Latham Handicap in race seven, the 37-year-old Nelson partnered with 2-1 choice SLAATS to beat the three-year-olds by one and a half lengths going a mile and 16th.

The pair returned a winning time of one minute, 44.60 seconds.

Under pressure

Favourite ASYOUBELIEVE showed early under pressure from 3-1 bet Glava with Nelson sitting the bay colt Slaats just off the pair, as the initial fractions came back in 24.26 for the quarter and 47.01 for the half.

Nelson made his bid nearing the three-eighths and carved out a marginal lead entering the stretch, before pulling away in the lane while being chased by Glava and 10-1 bet ITSMYDAY, who ran second in the end.

Earlier, Nelson had made his first visit to the winners’ enclosure when he produced a gate-to-wire effort aboard 4-1 chance REGAL MAX in race one to come away with a narrow victory over the three-year-olds and upward.

Going a mile, Nelson saved ground with the seven-year-old bay gelding and had opened a two-length lead at the half, run in 46.44 seconds.

EDDYSHAK, a 22-1 longshot, challenged in the lane but REGAL MAX held firm to win by a head.

Reigning champion Rico Walcott also tasted success, capturing race three over six and a half furlongs with favourite CHICA HERMOSA while fellow Barbadian Desmond Bryan also joined in the success, carrying 26-1 longshot BIG AL’S VISION to victory by a head over the three-year-olds and upward in race four over a mile.

Nelson lies second on 29 wins, four behind leader Enrique Gonzalez and one ahead of Walcott.
