GOLD COAST, Australia, (CMC):

Australia defeated West Indies by three wickets in the opening Twenty20 International of the two-match series at Carrara Stadium earlier today.

The West Indies scored 145 for nine off their 20 overs thanks to knocks of 39 from Kyle Mayers and a breezy 27 from Odean Smith against the bowling of Josh Hazlewood, 3-35, and Pat Cummins, 2-22.

In reply, Australia were forced to take it to the penultimate delivery, with Alzarri Joseph, 2-17, and Sheldon Cottrell, 2-49, pushing them all the way.

However, the Australians got over the line thanks to Aaron Finch's 58, and Matthew Wade's unbeaten 39.
