St Jago lead the way in Manning Cup Group G
St Jago High School took sole leadership of Group G in the ISSA Manning Cup yesterday after they completed a 2-0 win over rivals Wolmer’s Boys in one of four rescheduled games.
St Jago led the Heroes Circle-based school 2-0 last Monday (September 18), through a Javar Harris penalty and a Milton Lockin header before rain brought a halt to the proceedings at half-time.
However, despite pushing the home team all the way in the second half yesterday at Monk Street in Spanish Town, a resolute St Jago held on to take the points and move to the top of the group on maximum nine points, three more than Wolmer’s in second.
“This means the boys now believe they can go through and top the group,” assistant coach Rafe Wolfe told The Gleaner yesterday. “It feels good to be on top, but the work continues. The concentration level has to be higher. They are getting the concept that we want and it’s a good feeling being at the top of the group, but the work gets even harder now because everyone will be coming for us.”
Wolmer’s went on the front foot from the kickoff and created some nervy moments for the hosts but despite coming out on the losing end, coach Jerome Waite was still positive.
“The rain-affected half played in favour of Jago. They ended up scoring two goals. But the second 45 (minutes) was a different game. St Jago seeing they were in front, defended in numbers.
“We knew the only way to get back was to attack. So it was all-out attack but the opponents did well,” said the former St Jago High coach.
“It definitely will not (affect us). We will play these opponents again. We just have to move on and try to get three points from the next game,” he said.
