A report by a Brazilian nonprofit group says last year marked a new peak of violence in the country, with more than 58,000 violent deaths.

The report by the Brazilian Forum of Public Security says the previous record was over 55,000 violent deaths in 2013.

The report takes into account homicides, manslaughter and police killings.

While murder remains the top cause of violent death in Brazil, slayings by on- or off-duty police officers now are in second place.

Violence has long been plagued Brazil but is now in the spotlight as Rio de Janeiro gears up to host next year's Olympic games.

The Sao Paulo-based Forum is independent of the government.
