Canada Elections: PM Stephen Harper ousted, Liberals pull off big win
Canada's Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau pulled off a huge election victory late on Monday, unseating Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservatives.
The Liberals seized a parliamentary majority and Harper conceded defeat, ending the Conservatives’ nine-year reign.
"Tonight, the results are not what we had hoped for," Harper said. "But the people are never wrong."
He made the concession early in the night with preliminary results showing Liberal candidates securing 50 seats and leading in a further 181 which would put them in line for forming a majority government.
A total of 170 seats are need for a majority.
