SAN JUAN (AP):

FBI agents in Puerto Rico have arrested several former government officials accused of corruption.

The agency said yesterday that 10 suspects had been charged as part of an investigation into the alleged exchange of campaign contributions for public contracts and political favours.

Among the arrested is businessman Anaudi Hern·ndez, who serves as the campaign fundraiser for the governor's Popular Democratic Party. Attorney Osvaldo Carlo told WAPA TV that Hernandez had done nothing illegal.

Other suspects include former high-level officials at the island's water and sewer company and employees with the House of Representatives.

The US Attorney's Office is scheduled to release more details at a press conference soon.
