JDF Invit Volleyball

The three-day Jamaica Defence Force Invitational Volleyball tournament starts today at the GC Foster College in Spanish Town.

At least 20 male and female clubs and high school teams will be in action. In addition there will be an exhibition match between a combined JDF and Special Olympics team on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Teams in each section will be placed into two groups with the top four advancing to the quarter-finals. The tournament begins this morning at 9 with action among high schools. In the opening matches Kingston College will face Old Harbour High while Wolmer's Girls oppose St Jago High.

The club section begins in mid-afternoon with JDF 'B' opposing GC Foster and UWI 'B' meeting Yallahs. Both are men's matches. The quarter-finals and some semi-finals will be played tomorrow with finals in all sections being played on Sunday, starting at 11 a.m.

St Mary final

The St Mary final of the Insport All-Island Community Football Championship will be played today with Azteca United facing Fort Stewart Youth Club at the Westmoreland Oval in Annotto Bay. Kick-off time is 2 p.m. The St Mary champions will join the early qualifiers into the National round of 16.

Already qualified are: Kingston's Caribbean Strikers; St Andrew's Jungle 12 and Franklyn Town; Clarendon's Toll Gate; Trelawny's Flamingo and St James' Top Hill.

ISSA Table Tennis

In two Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Table Tennis Urban Under-16 girls matches played on Wednesday, hosts Ardenne clipped Campion 3-2 and Hillel won by default from hosts Gaynstead.

After these results, Campion led the standings with five points, followed by Ardenne on four, Hillel three, Wolmer's one point and Gaynstead yet to get off the mark. The top four finishers will progress to the semi-finals on March 19. The finals will also be played on the same day at the Hy-Performance Centre.

In individual results fromWednesday's matches Kerry-Ann Whyte won two matches to star for Ardenne, as she stunned Kristen McKenzie 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 12-14, 12-10 (3-2) and overpowered Rebecca Harris 11-7, 11-5, 11-5 (3-0). Ashli Alexander cruised past Harris 11-2, 11-4, 11-2 (3-0) to win the third for Ardenne, as McKenzie outlasted Alexander 15-17, 13-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-7 (3-2) and Janique Lee trounced Anna-Kaye Jones 11-4, 11-3, 11-7 (3-0) for Campion's two consolation victories.
