Bridgmohan closes gap with double
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CMC):
Form jockey Shaun Bridgmohan followed up his triple on Saturday with two more wins Sunday, and the Jamaican is now just six wins off the lead in the Fair Grounds jockeys' championship standings.
Bridgmohan won the sixth and ninth races on the card and climbed to 36 wins at the meet, trailing leader James Graham (42) and Jamie Theriot (40), with just under two months remaining in the Fair Ground 2009/2010 season.
Bridgmohan scored a smashing win in the US$22,000 sixth race over 1-1/16th miles with the 6-1 bet Indian Blossom. He roused the five-year-old mare to lead coming off the final turn and moved clear to win by 6-1/4 lengths in one minute, 46.35 seconds.
Five wins
Bridgmohan, who had captured Saturday's third, fifth and sixth races, completed five wins in two days when he piloted the four-year-old filly It's A Star to victory with a perfectly timed ride in the US$21,000 ninth race.
A 4-1 shot in the nine-horse field going a mile and 40 yards, It's A Star raced at the back of the field early until Bridgmohan made his move on the rails leaving the backstretch.
He shifted his mount for an outside run and after entering the homestretch seventh, rallied It's A Star for a telling finishing burst and scored by half-length, edging the 9-1 outsider at the wire.
