Utech focus: Celebrating 52 years

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) is celebrating 52 years this year, as an institution of higher learning under the theme, 'Reaching for the Stars: Building Research Capacity, Scholarship and Service'. The milestone will be marked with a number of activities to be held during the University's Annual Anniversary Week, March 14 to 19.

The week will commence with a thanksgiving service on Sunday, March 14, at Hope United Church. On Tuesday, March 16, the university will showcase its research and technology innovations at the annual Research and Technology Day at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium on UTech's Papine campus.

On Wednesday, March 17, the university will join with members of the Papine community and environs for a cultural exposition dubbed 'Concert in the Park', to be held from 2-4 p.m. in the Papine Park.

The annual, prestigious anniversary lecture will be delivered by Professor Sara Seager, renowned planetary scientist and astrophysicist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Thursday, March 18 at 5 p.m. at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium. Professor Seager's lecture is titled, 'Reaching for the Stars: The Discovery of Planets Beyond the Solar System'. On March 19, UTech's Centre for the Arts will present a Literary Festival and Cultural Showcase. The festival will pay tribute to cultural icons Trevor Rhone, Wycliff Bennett, Sony Bradshaw and Wayne Brown. The grand cultural showcase will further celebrate these Jamaican icons in song, dance and drama.
