Disaster waiting to happen

Published:Friday | February 12, 2010 | 12:00 AM

A few years ago in Broadgate, St Mary, a bridge collapsed and several persons who unfortunately were on the bridge were thrown into the river and were seriously hurt. A few years later, residents of the Hamilton Mountain and Jack's River communities are awaiting virtually helplessly to suffer a similar fate.

The Eden Park Bridge, approximately one mile from Oracabesssa heading towards Jack's River, facilitates transit of pedestrian and vehicular traffic for many years. However, it has now become hazardous to all as it now dangerously slopes at the centre and is a disaster waiting to happen. Given the fact that the Eden Park Bridge is much bigger than the bridge in Broadgate and the body of water beneath is much deeper, should it collapse with persons on it, the chance of them surviving is less likely.

Still no response

The member of parliament, Robert Montague, promised that work would have begun on the bridge from last month, but to date, nothing has been done. Many reports have been made to the parish council and the residents have even taken to the streets, and still, no response.

As a concerned citizen, I am using this medium to call on the relevant authorities, especially the member of parliament, Robert Montague, who traverses that stretch of road as well, to kindly use his office to get those responsible to have the bridge fixed. Please be proactive and not reactive as the latter would be catastrophic.

I am, etc.,
