Tackling crime in Portmore
THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN RESPONSE to the growing crime situation in Portmore, I would like to put a few suggestions on the table. The suggestions might not follow the conventional way of thinking but could prove effective over the short, medium and long term.
1.
Move quickly to erect surveillance cameras in strategic locations.
2.
Put together and implement a plan to remove zinc fences from Portmore communities, starting with Newlands.
3.
Develop with teachers, civic organisations and citizens associations a network of homework centres and mentoring centres in Portmore.
4.
Seek and develop dialogue with informal leadership groups in order to develop a system of social order. Among such groups are the political leadership, police and citizens.
5.
Finally, a massive beautification project should be developed and implemented with the help of the municipality, backed by the chamber of commerce, civic associations and further supported by the Portmore/Lakeland twinning agreement.
I am, etc.,
