Hang hardened murderers!
The Editor
, Sir:
The Reverend Mark Stewart, in delivering the sermon at the funeral service of slain dentist Dr Ricardo Patrick Fraser on Sunday, never minced words in his call for the doctor's murderers to be killed in return. This statement, coming from a reverend, no doubt refocuses the spotlight on the issue of capital punishment in this country, known far and wide as the murder capital of the world.
One cannot help but ask, 'Why is it that Jamaica's lawmakers are so reluctant to enforce this capital punishment law, which continues to exist on our books, without being given 'teeth'?'
Ineffective politicians
I think the time has come in this country when somebody needs to stand up and challenge those who have established themselves as just political babblers who have nothing more to contribute to the solving of our crime problems than just windy speeches and time-wasting strategies. Hang those hardened murderers who traverse this land, killing innocent people like wild birds in the woods!
Leave the debate over the wrongness or rightness of capital punishment for Sunday school and sabbath school discussion classes. Enforce the law on our books. And, if we find the guilty, be he priest, police, politician or peasant, prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is guilty and hang him - simple, no apologies.
I am, etc.,
