Join forces to protect children - Bennett

Government Senator Hyacinth Bennett has called for the amalgamation of the Child Development Agency (CDA) and the Office of the Children's Advocate to see to the welfare of children.

Bennett submitted the proposal in a motion in the Senate yesterday.

Bennett called for a national consultation as a precursor to the establishment of a national policy on children.

The motion had been on the order paper of the Senate for some time, but it was amended yesterday given the reports which highlighted the conditions under which wards of the State were being forced to live.

Bennett emphasised that crucial to the dialogue was that children must be provided with a forum in which to voice their concerns.

She said a synergy between the CDA and the Office of the Children's Advocate would ensure that critical and scarce resources in a small developing state were maximised for optimum output.
