Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Olivia Grange will today officially launch 2010 as the Inter-American Year of Women in Jamaica.

The ceremony will take place today at the Jamaica Conference Centre, beginning at 10 a.m.

2010 was declared the Inter-American Year of Women by the Organisation of American States/Inter-America Commission on Women.

The ceremony will feature a panel discussion examining the impact of HIV/AIDS on women's health.

The event is being organised by the Bureau of Women's Affairs, an agency of the ministry, and will also have an awards component in observation of International Women's Day, when women across the world are recognised for their contribution to the various spheres of life. Several women from various sectors will be honoured by the bureau.

The theme for International Women's Day this year is 'Equal rights, equal opportunities: progress for all'.

Her Excellency the Most Honourable Lady Allen, the wife of the Governor General, is the patron of International Women's Day.
