YMCA helps the disabled

The Kingston Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) has set up a life-coping skills programme to provide hands-on experience for adult persons with disabilities.

"Many of these individuals are able to demonstrate comprehension by role playing in the classroom but cannot transfer this learning to life situations in their communities," the YMCA said in a release.

The programme aims to encourage independence and self-reliance on the part of each participant and increase their ability to be active within their homes and families, as well as become productive members of their communities and the society.

The participants will be required to do an assessment to see their level of competence.

The programme will operate four days per week - Mondays to Thursdays, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

"It is recognised that these persons will not necessarily function at the same level, hence, some will take a longer time to master a skill while others will adapt to the programme quicker," the YMCA said.

Individuals with special skills will be invited to share with the participants on a weekly basis on various topics.

The programme will target adults with disabilities and those out of school with one of the following:

Developmental disability

Learning disability

Intellectual disability

Attention deficit disorder

Hearing Impairment

The programme will provide some of the following activities

Basic computer which involves making: Cards for birthdays, Christmas, etc., calendars, book markers, programmes for functions, business cards, PowerPoint presentations

Basic English - comprehending for day-to-day mobility

Basic math

Art and craft

This is intended to prepare participants to earn their own income.
