Give them rope, Sister P
The Editor, Sir:
Many are calling on the Opposition and particularly, its leader Portia Simpson Miller as leader to become forthright in challenging corruption in the Government. That is not a recommended course of action. Not unless, of course, she is into the business of assisted suicide.
The Government needs no help. They are doing a fine job of sinking themselves. Over the past few months, the covers of the local newspapers and the nightly news reports have been awash, on an almost daily basis, with a persistently pitiful eulogy for a severely diseased and rapidly dying regime. It will perhaps not be long before the embattled minister of information begins to make his appearance in sackcloth and ashes.
Sister P and the People's National Party would do well to keep their safe distance. Nothing is more vicious than a caged creature which does not wish to be tamed. Both Mr Vaz's and the prime minister's recent snarls at Peter Phillips, and the shamefully snappy behaviour of government MPs in Parliament, are apt reminders of this fact.
Give them rope, Sister P, give them rope. This Government needs absolutely no help. They are doing a fine job of exposing their corruption all by themselves and the electors of Jamaica, the US State department and the wider world community is taking careful note.
I am, etc.,
VIRGINIA POLLARD
