The seventh staging of the Jamaica International Invitational promises to be bigger and better this year, with Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) on board as the title sponsor.

JNBS commitment extends beyond the sponsorship of the May 1 meet as the company will be supporting other activities to be staged by the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) through May 1 to June 27, which include five all-comers meets, as well as the National Junior and Senior Championships.

Building a stronger JAAA

Despite refusing to disclose the sponsorship total, Earl Jarrett, general manager of the JNBS, outlined other ways in which his company would support the JAAA while speaking at the press conference held on Friday at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in St Andrew.

"We are going to work with the JAAA to help to market the programme, we are going to work with them to improve the facilities at their head offices, and we are going to help them in their organisational and administrative capacity building so that they are a stronger organisation," said Jarrett. "There is no point in just developing the athletes when the institution that is moving to develop these athletes doesn't have the resources to function," he added.

JAAA's president, Howard Aris, revealed that the sponsorship represents the largest backing that has ever been given to the invitational meet.

"It is the highest sponsorship in total that we have received for our invitational meet, and what is good about this is that JNBS involvement does not only include the invitational meets, but our development programme, our administrative requirements," said Aris.

"We are very pleased and proud to be associated with this company and we look forward not only to this year's event, but to events to come," he added.
