  • De la Vega, Dunbeholden renew rivalry

De la Vega United hope to continue their dominance of Portmore's Dunbeholden when the teams meet in a Captain's Bakery & Grill-sponsored St Catherine Major League first-leg football semi-final at the Prison Oval tomorrow evening at 6.

De la Vega have beaten Dunbeholden twice this season, 3-2 and 1-0, away and at home, respectively, in preliminary round action.

In the opening game at the venue at 4 p.m., Royal Lakes oppose Waterford in a first-leg semi-final match in the St Catherine FA Division One league.


  • Church cricket bowls off

The fourth staging of the Power of Faith 20/20 church cricket league bowls off this morning, with a double-header at the Lime Tree Oval in St Catherine.

At 9:30 a.m., last year's beaten finalists Portmore New Testament take on Braeton New Testament, while the second match at 1:30 p.m. pits defending champions Power of Faith Seniors against Jamaica Evangelistic Centre.

The teams are playing for the Bishop Dr Delford Davis trophy for Excellency.


  • Colours still unbeaten in Portmore domino

Unbeaten Colours Sports Club made it 17 wins from as many matches in the Portmore/St Catherine domino league on Sunday, April 11 when they drubbed Westchester 300-225 in Division Two away at Westchester.

Colours, the team from Port Henderson Plaza, lead the Division-Two standings with maximum 68 points from 17 matches, clear of Ken's Wildflower with 47 from 16 matches, with Black Rooster in third. Significantly, Colours are the only unbeaten team in the Portmore domino league.

The Division-Two match between Black Rooster and Seamaster at Prison Oval ended prematurely arising from a dispute with Seamaster leading 282-274 at that stage.

Jamaica Domino Federation president Gerald Stephens said the disciplinary committee will convene a meeting to rule on this match and take appropriate action where necessary.

In other Division-Two matches played on Sunday, Marlie Mount scored a notable upset, defeating second-place Ken's Wildflower 300-293, Caymanas Track Domino Club beat Correctional Services 300-272 at Caymanas Park, while Lime Tree whipped Triple X Old Harbour 300-232.

Meanwhile, Division-One leaders Eagle View beat defending champions Fort International 300-282 in the feature match at Passagefort to lead the standings with 62 points from 18 matches.

In other matches played, second-place Caribbean Classic whipped Ackee Pod 300-250, Prozz and Conzz beat Right Stuff 300-292 in a countdown, North Street United stopped Eradication 300-296 in another countdown, ISCF clipped Hurricane 300-295 in yet another countdown, while Village Link defeated Masterpiece 300-285. The competition continues tomorrow with the usual quota of matches starting at 11:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, the Portmore Domino League marks its 25th anniversary next Saturday, April 24 with an awards dinner at the Twin City Restaurant, Port Henderson Road, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $2,000 each.


  • Skittles singleschampionship

Five-time champion Robert 'Dave' McKen from Eagles will take on Richard Mohammed from the The Dip in one of the eight matches in the Sistas skittles singles championship tonight at the Mystix Sports Bar, 783/4 Hagley Park Road. The action starts at 6 p.m.

Nearly all of the top players in local skittles are seeking quarter-final spots tonight, including McKen, former champions Nehemiah 'Fatta' Henry' and Keith Barrett, both from Eastern All-Stars, teammate Steve Thompson, Clinton 'Fly Up' Thompson from Eagles, teammates Dean Jones and Emmanuel Munda, Winston 'Whimpy' Lyew from Willies Strikers, the lone female Ruthlyn 'Marcia' Bailey from Rowe's Strikers, teammate Garfield 'Millilgram' Samuels, Sidney Corrington from Eastern, Orville Smith, Everald Thomas and Clarence 'Micey' Williams from Mystix and Lenville Pottinger from Portmore-based Meadowvale.

Some of the more interesting match-ups are between teammates Nehemiah Henry and Keith Barrett, Garfield Samuels vs Dane Jones, Steve Thompson vs 'Wimpy' Lyew and Everald Thomas vs Clinton Thompson.

The Pattex Cup league took a break on Sunday, April 11, for the funeral of the late Waltham Strikers and The Dip female player, Karlene Wright who is a former secretary of the Jamaica Skittles Federation. The competition resumes tomorrow with six matches at three venues.

They are Starliner vs Dragon, Eastern All-Stars vs Meadowvale, both at Eastern Skittles Club, 113 Windward Road; while Mystix take on Rowe's Strikers and Olympic oppose Willies, both at Olympic Gardens, 194 Bay Farm Road, with Waltham vs Mercury and The Dip vs House of House of Peace at The Dip, Gregory Park.


  • Business House domino starts May 7

The 2010 Business House domino competition is scheduled to start on Friday, May 7 with 25 teams, but prior to that on Friday, April 30, the launching will take place at Wray & Nephew, home of the new sponsor.

The competition (divisions I and 2) will be sponsored by Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum for the first time, replacing previous sponsor JET.

Seprod are defending Division-One champions, National Baking Company Division-Two champions, while Berger Paints are the defending KO champions.


  • Christian Pen in driver's seat

Christian Pen are firmly in the driver's seat after a commanding 2-0 win over arch-rivals Watson Grove in a first-leg semi-final in the e-Services-sponsored Portmore Division Two football League on Sunday, April 11. Christian Pen's goals came via Jermaine Fogah and Sheldon Sharpe. In the other semi-final, Racing United with goals from Sanjay Williams and Andre Palmer clipped Westport 2-1 coming from behind.

The second-leg games will be played tomorrow. Games on are Christian Pen versus Watson Grove 1 p.m., Racing United against Westport 3 p.m. Both games will be played at the Ferdie Neita Park.


  • Coaches' night

Monday night's leg of the Horace Payne Memorial went to youth team coaches Richard Phillips and Valerie Marshall with a creditable 59.52% score. The ultra-consistent pair of Audley Astwood and Winston Chin You (56.35%) were second from Rex James and Judy Ziadie (55.56%) third. T

he top three pairs in Wednesday's leg of the Dr David Levy Trophy finished in a heap including a tie for first between junior players Walter Brown/Michael Marshall and the journeymen Winston Chin You/Audley Astwood. Their 54.17% round was good enough to pip Rex James and Judy Ziadie (53.47%; 3rd again) by one half of a match point.

Tomorrow, starting at 10:00 a.m, a special two session open pairs tournament will be played at the Liguanea Club for the Pascal Wong Ken Championship. The entry fee of $800 per person will include lunch and bridge players are encouraged to come out and have a great day in honour of one of Jamaica's most passionate bridge enthusiasts of the 1960s and 70s when names like Pascal Wong Ken, Lucien Chen, Ralph St Luce, B.K. Frankson, Bunny and K.G. Martin, Ronnie Tai Ten Quee, Ruby Lyons and Dudley Boxer were famous on the local bridge scene.
