Apologise to the SLB

The Editor, Sir:
In his contribution to the Senate, Basil Waite charged that 1,500 students, or just over 16 per cent of the more than 9,000 who sought funding assistance from the Students' Loan Bureau (SLB) in 2009, were turned down. That would be very bad and would indicate that those students are either enduring great hardships or are not able to access tertiary education.
As it turned out, the SLB refuted those claims (see The Gleaner, Monday, April 19, page A10), stating that only 44 persons, or 0.51 per cent of students, had their application declined for the period.
Senator Waite erred and should apologise to the SLB and to the country at large.
