Record win for Campion
Campion College claimed a record seventh hold on the National Schools Chess Cham-pionships, after scoring a close-blitz chess play-off win over Glenmuir High in the final last Saturday.
The showdown, which took place at Kingston College, saw Campion emerging 4-2 winners in the best-of-six blitz play-off, after both teams had played to a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation play.
The play-off, which is a new concept that has been introduced into chess as a means of breaking ties and raising its attractiveness, saw the top two speed-chess players of both teams, Glenmuir's Noel Brown and Campion's Phillip Pryce, going head-to-head.
After the first three games, Brown led the contest 2-1. But buoyed by some smart moves from Pryce, the latter was able to sneak in front 3-2, before running away with the contest.
