Jamaica and Fedelatin featherweight boxing champion, Nicholas Walters, has taken one step closer towards a world title fight, as he is now rated No.7 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).

This was announced by the WBA yesterday in its ratings for December.

Walters, who has been boxing as a professional for just over two years after a very successful amateur career, has been creating waves in Panama where he is based and is quite an attraction there. He now has a 17-0 record.

His promotion from No. 9 in the November ratings came about after his scintillating victory over Gonzalo Mungia from Nicaragua on December 18 last year in Colón, Panama.

Mungia, who has fought for the WBA super-featherweight title, was expected to be a dangerous opponent for Walters. However, this did not happen as Walters seized the initiative early and never relented while overwhelming his opponent. The fight was called to a halt by the referee after a devastating eighth round from Walters that left his opponent beaten. This was recorded as a ninth round tko victory.

Jacques Deschamps, who manages Walters, told The Gleaner he wants to keep his fighter busy and hopes to have him in the ring again next month.

"A title fight this year is a distinct possibility, but there are no immediate plans. I just want him to keep on winning and moving up the ratings. We will see what happens as the year progresses" he said.
