Wellington Street car park to be renamed

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:

THE ST Catherine Parish Council has passed a resolution to name the Wellington Street car park in the Old Capital in honour of the late councillor for the Spanish Town division, Everton Morrison.

Morrison, 58, died at the Spanish Town Hospital on December 29 last year, following a stroke.

In endorsing the resolution, councillor for the Linstead division, Denise Daley, said it was fitting that Morrison, who served the division from September 1988 to December 2010, be recognised for his invaluable contribution. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the council's public-health committee.

While adding his support, John Wilson, councillor for the Ginger Ridge division, said it would not be appropriate to rename the park in its present state in recognition of such a hard worker.

However, Andrew Wheatley, council chairman, moved quickly to address his concern.

"We are just doing the resolution. We are going to fix up the place before we put up the sign, councillor," said Wheatley.

Shortly after Morrison's death, Aundre Franklin, Jamaica Labour Party general secretary, described Morrison as a hard-working and committed councillor for the Spanish Town division, which forms part of the Central St Catherine constituency held by Member of Parliament, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange.
