Gov't conspiracy in Eastern St Thomas, claims Ferguson
Senior Staff Reporter, Daraine Luton
Ferguson, in addressing scores of fired-up People's National Party (PNP) supporters in East St Thomas, claimed a plot has been hatched within the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to undermine him.
"There is a conspiracy against the duly elected member of parliament in this constituency. We have seen them working through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, bringing out what they call rehabilitation grants. Bringing out gifts as it relates to other kinds of welfare things," he said.
The MP said such welfare would normally come through the member of parliament "but because of a connection, everybody in Eastern St Thomas is being promised farm work card now".
mp since '93
Ferguson has been the MP since 1993 when he unseated the JLP's Pearnel Charles, the current labour minister. The JLP has indicated it would be sending Charles' daughter, Dr Patrece Charles Freeman, to challenge Ferguson in the next general election.
The four-term MP says he has asked questions of the labour ministry and will be continuing his probe.
"I am giving warning now, I have written to the permanent secretary in that ministry to say, 'Send me the number of persons in this constituency and St Thomas that have benefited'. And I am about to write again because I want a second update," Ferguson declared.
He added: "I intend to write to the auditor general of Jamaica to do an audit of the benefits that have come into Eastern St Thomas since they don't want to give me the true thing."
