The Mico University College recently received a $1-million donation from Gore Developments Ltd (GDL) towards its upcoming Math and Science Conference.

GDL said it decided to make the contribution after reading an article published in early February stating Mico's need to raise $3 million for the conference, slated for next Monday and Tuesday.

According to Dr Albert Benjamin, head of Natural Science at Mico and conference chair: "The sponsorship from Mr (Phillip) Gore gave us the confidence that allowed us to move into action and pay for what we need to pay for. The Gore cheque was a game changer."

Gore, GDL's chairman, has also pledged this as the beginning of a long-term relationship with Mico, committing to contributing a Mico student scholarship annually. The scholarship will be named the James P. Gore Scholarship, for Phillip Gore's late grandfather who attended Mico many years ago.

"We think that education is the future of Jamaica," stated Gore, whose company is constantly engaged in education-based initiatives through the funding of scholarships, refurbishing classrooms and other means of support.
