Charity event wants to turn around fortunes after economic downturn

The 2012 Powerful Women and Men Perform for Charity show will be held on Sunday, June 3 at the National Indoor Sports Centre, beginning 6 p.m.

In celebration of the island's 50th anniversary of Independence, the theme for the show will be 'Say it Loud ... We are 50 and Proud'.

Thyra Heaven, chairman of the organising committee of the Powerful Women and Men Perform for Charity show, said the committee had begun the process of inviting some of the island's decision makers to indicate their willingness to perform by Monday, April 9.

"In addition, we wish to publicly invite leaders from the various sectors of our society - from all corners of Jamaica - to contact us through the Mustard Seed Communities and offer their talents to this year's programme to the charity," Heaven said.

According to the chairman of the organising committee: "We are never satisfied with our accomplishments in fundraising, even though over the past 11 years of staging the show we have raised more than $30 million. In fact, with the downturn in the economy, the last two shows have not raised as much funds as we had projected."

spirit of volunteerism

However, Heaven said she was looking forward to Jamaicans supporting the Powerful Women & Men Perform for Charity show in this year of Jamaica's Jublilee, and made an appeal to loyal patrons and new supporters of the event to make a special effort to fill the National Indoor Sports Centre, in the true spirit of volunteerism.

She said - as introduced last year - there is a new production team, led by Weston Haughton, that is in place for the 12th staging of the show, which comprises a number of young people with creative ideas.

"So we are looking forward to an even more exciting show than in the past," she said.

In fact, Heaven said the recruitment of the young volunteers was part of the succession planning, as some of the original performers had taken the decision not to perform but to assist with the administration of the event.

"This year is going to be fresh and different! We already have commitments from at least two of the island's international celebrities to make special appearances and that should make the event even more exciting," she said.
