Senior citizen dies in fire
A senior citizen perished on Friday night in a fire that destroyed a section of a nursing home in May Pen, Clarendon. Two other elderly residents were injured during the fire at the Howard Avenue-based home and had to be rushed to hospital for treatment.
Details surrounding the fire are still sketchy, but assistant superintendent Neville Dawkins attached to the May Pen Fire Station told The Sunday Gleaner that the cause of the fire has not been determined as yet. "The estimated loss is about $50,000. The fire was mainly contained to a bed in one of the rooms," said the senior firefighter.
The dead woman has been identified as Elimina James. Her exact age was not immediately known. Dawkins said she was either 84 or 91. The injured women were identified as Viola Smith and Emeline Raymond.
