Tobacco-control law long overdue

It is welcome news that the minister of health, Fenton Ferguson, has again committed that he will ensure that the tobacco-control legislation will soon become a reality.
The Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control members - the Medical Association of Jamaica, the Nurses Association of Jamaica, the Caribbean College of Family Physicians, the GPs' Association, the Jamaica Dental Association, the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, the Jamaica Cancer Society, the Diabetes Association of Jamaica and the Caribbean Public Health Association of Jamaica - are 100 per cent behind the minister in this regard.
The scientific evidence outlining the negative health effects of smoking and second-hand smoke are irrefutable. The tobacco-control legislation is long overdue.
