German-based shipping company Harren & Partner (H&P) has reaffirmed its commitment to the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) and Jamaica, with plans to expand its operations locally.

The company is to establish a specialised workshop at the CMI, which will facilitate repairs and servicing of: ship engines, life rafts, firefighting equipment, radar equipment, compass and GPS and other highly technical shipboard electronics.

Peter Harren, founder of H&P, and Andreas Schorlemmer of Perez y Cia's, local agents for Caribbean Feeder Services (CFS), met with Omar Davies minister of transport, works and housing and Richard Azan, state minister in the said ministry, late last month. It was during this meeting the reaffirmation was given and the intent to expand was made.

Employment opportunities

According to Fritz Pinnock, executive director of the CMI, the specialised workshop is in keeping with the Institute's Blue Ocean Strategy. "By positioning this workshop at the CMI, it affords students and staff first-hand experience in carrying out actual real-life repairs, thereby creating much-needed employment opportunities and subsequently assisting the CMI in fulfilling its mandate of producing industry-ready leaders," Pinnock said.

H&P and the CMI have an established partnership which sees the shipping company providing 50 training berths to CMI cadets as well as employment of officers annually. H&P, with over 55 vessels in its fleet, is the largest supplier of cadet berths for the Institute's mandatory sea-training programme.

Caribbean Maritime Institute is the premier maritime educational institution of choice for higher learning training, research and consultancy in the Western Hemisphere, catering to land and sea transportation, and boasting over seven bachelor's and two master of science degrees. The Institute is committed to producing world-class, disciplined and well-rounded officers not just for the commercial cargo industry, but also for the cruise and ultra-luxury yacht sectors. This is further underscored by its ISO 9001:2008 certification from the prestigious Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance Inc.
