Not a personal attack on JPS, says Wehby

Below is a statement from Don Wehby, GraceKennedy Group chief executive officer, regarding the company's support for the Fight for your Light campaign.

The campaign is a Facebook initiative which provides a forum for persons to express their frustration with high electricity bills.

GRACEKENNEDY HAS always enjoyed a cordial relationship with the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) and we have no doubt that this will continue.

It is important to state that this is not a personal attack on the company. We support the 'Fight For your Light' campaign because we see it as an issue that needs to be dealt with on a national level. Residential rates have gone up significantly over the years. The Facebook initiative 'Fight for your Light' is mobilising Jamaicans to speak out against high electricity rates.

Companies across Jamaica cannot grow to their true potential with rising electricity rates. By extension, for the Jamaican economy to grow, the cost of electricity needs to come down dramatically.

The current high cost of electricity is a huge deterrent to entrepreneurs and start-up businesses.

High electricity rates create a domino effect and, therefore, impact the cost of living significantly as businesses have to pass on these high rates to their customers when pricing products and services.

We are aware, through the media, that JPS is putting plans in place to reduce electricity rates significantly. We encourage them to do so as expeditiously as possible.
